The University of Kentucky College of Medicine Internal Medicine Residency Program offers three separate residency tracks: Categorical Residency, Med/Peds Residency Program, and Medicine-Psychiatry program. The program aims to support residents in achieving their career goals, whether it be becoming a subspecialist, a primary care physician in a rural area, or leading quality improvement initiatives in a hospital setting. Residents who are undecided about their career path will receive guidance to help them discover their ideal career direction.
The Med/Peds Residency Program, established in 1983, provides a comprehensive four-year curriculum to prepare residents for successful careers in various areas such as outpatient primary care, hospital medicine, subspecialty fellowship, academics, and research. This program offers a well-rounded education in both internal medicine and pediatrics.
The Medicine-Psychiatry program at the University of Kentucky is a combined five-year program that leads to certification in both internal medicine and psychiatry. Residents in this program will equally split their time between internal medicine and psychiatry to gain insights from both specialties and deliver comprehensive care to patients, filling a crucial role in the healthcare system.
Furthermore, the Primary Care Program at the University of Kentucky, launched in 1978, focuses on meeting the primary care needs of the community by providing specialized clinical, leadership, and advocacy training for residents interested in pursuing careers in primary care.
