The University of Kentucky Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program is a five-year, fully accredited program. The first year is dedicated to an orthopaedic internship at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, with rotations including orthopaedic surgery, emergency medicine, plastic surgery, diagnostic radiology, general surgery trauma, surgical ICU, and surgical simulation.
Residents in years two through five solely focus on orthopaedic surgery, with rotations including orthopaedic trauma, hand, sports medicine, research, along with a combined recon service for oncology, spine, and foot/ankle. Residents also serve rotations at the Lexington Shriner’s Hospital for Children and reconstructive rotations at the Veterans Hospital, which are connected to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
Additionally, residents enhance their experience by serving within the Sports Medicine service. UK Sports Medicine is the primary sports medicine provider for various local athletic and professional teams. The program emphasizes a strong work ethic, personal responsibility among residents, and faculty investment in developing clinical and surgical skills, personal growth, and leadership.
