1565260C0The Mount Carmel Health System Orthopedic Residency Program is a distinguished 5-year program established in 1945 and fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This program offers two positions annually and is integrated with the National Residency Match Program (NRMP), providing a structured environment for residents to develop their skills progressively. Residents in the program are granted greater responsibilities as they advance through the years, with PGY-5 residents managing and treating patients with increased autonomy, reflecting their growing clinical expertise.
At Mount Carmel, the selection process aims to match residents whose values resonate with the institution's mission. The program is known for producing competent graduates, equipped with foundational knowledge, refined decision-making, and technical skills necessary for entry into independent orthopedic practices. A significant number of graduates opt to pursue fellowship training, securing positions in highly competitive subspecialties.
1Curriculum Overview
The curriculum of the Mount Carmel Orthopedic Residency Program is exhaustive, ensuring residents gain comprehensive exposure to various aspects of orthopedic practice. The structured curriculum adheres to ACGME standards and includes:
- PGY-1 Rotations: Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, PM&R, Trauma Service, Vascular Surgery, and Orthopedic Surgery.
- PGY-2 Focus: Emphasis on general orthopedics alongside introductory subspecialty experiences in a three-month Basic Science curriculum.
- PGY-3 and PGY-4 Rotations: Include Adult Orthopedics, Basic Science and Anatomy, Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery, and Pediatric Orthopedics.
- PGY-5 Chief Year: Dedicated to advanced training in orthopedic subspecialties, with chief residents acting as junior attending physicians to foster leadership skills.
The majority of rotations occur at Mount Carmel Grove City and Mount Carmel East Hospitals, along with clinical opportunities at other local centers. Residents benefit from significant hands-on experience and are required to participate in outpatient clinics and scholarly projects throughout their training.
4Application Process and Requirements
Applications for the Mount Carmel Orthopedic Residency must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Only fourth-year US medical students are considered for positions, with strict prerequisites including the inclusion of USMLE Part II scores in the application. Applicants typically receive interview invitations by early December, with interviews scheduled for January. The program recommends the use of standardized letters of recommendation (SLOR) but will also accept traditional letters (3 or 4). Additional competitive factors include a requirement to have no more than one failed attempt on any USMLE Step exams.
2Research and Scholarly Activities
Research is a vital component of the residency program, with expectations for residents to complete at least two scholarly projects throughout their training. One project must be a major research initiative under faculty supervision, while the second can be a review article or case study. Further emphasis on academic pursuits is supported by opportunities to present at national meetings, facilitated by department-sponsored financial support.
5Conferences and Continuing Education
The Mount Carmel Orthopedic program promotes continuous learning through various conferences and workshops. Each resident is encouraged to attend at least one national orthopedic conference annually, supported by a dedicated travel stipend. Specific PGY-level conferences include:
- PGY-1: AO/Synthes Basic Fracture Conference
- PGY-2: AANA Arthroscopy Course
- PGY-3: Reconstruction Course
- PGY-4: Leadership Course
- PGY-5: Board Review Course
Additionally, residents participate in monthly conferences that encompass trauma review, morbidity and mortality discussions, and attending conferences, fostering collaborative learning and knowledge sharing among peers and faculty.
3Competitive Edge and Visa Sponsorship
The Orthopedic Residency Program at Mount Carmel is regarded as competitive, seeking highly qualified US medical graduates (MDs and DOs) as well as International Medical Graduates (IMGs). The program actively evaluates candidates based on their educational background and performance on licensure exams. For international applicants, the program provides visa sponsorship, particularly for J-1 visas, supporting international residents in their training.
