As an ACGME-certified residency program, it continually aims to uphold high standards in educating residents in patient care, embodying its commitment as part of one of the largest osteopathic training sites in the United States.
Curriculum and Training Structure
The curriculum is designed to ensure residents gain expertise in treating a diverse range of health conditions. A hallmark of this program is its robust ambulatory experience, which is significantly advanced compared to many standard family residency programs. Residents primarily engage in their training at the state-of-the-art Family Practice Center located in Grove City, where they handle outpatient medical and preventive care.
In the second year, junior residents participate in patient interactions four to five half-days each week, while senior residents continue this practice unless engaged in a full month out rotation. Additionally, residents rotate through OhioHealth Doctors Hospital and the renowned Nationwide Children’s Hospital for vital inpatient rotation experiences.
Diverse Clinical Experience
The program emphasizes both clinical and procedural education. The structured rotations include:
- Family Practice: Extensive ambulatory experience totaling 2.5 blocks in PGY1, 10 blocks in PGY2, and 10 blocks in PGY3.
- Internal Medicine: Six months, incorporating hospital-based and ambulatory experiences for cognitive and procedure-oriented training.
- Surgery: Four blocks, focusing on outpatient experiences in orthopedics, urology, general surgery, and otorhinolaryngology.
- Obstetrics and Gynecology: Three months with an emphasis on office gynecology, enhanced through experience at the Women’s Health Clinic at Doctors Hospital.
- Pediatrics: A comprehensive four-and-a-half months rotating through hospital-based clinics, private practices, and a pediatric hospital.
- Emergency Medicine: Three months, providing training in acute, undifferentiated emergency issues.
- Electives: Opportunities to pursue one month in PGY1, two months in PGY2, and three months in PGY3.
Research and Scholarly Activity
The program places a strong emphasis on research, supporting an environment conducive to collaboration between residents, faculty, and the broader medical community. Dedicated time for research activities is allotted, with residents benefiting from access to resources available at the OhioHealth Research and Innovation Institute. The Family Practice research committee and faculty research advisors further augment this initiative.
Support Services for Residents
The program is structured to promote resident well-being and success, offering services including:
- Pharmacist support for medicine reconciliation and therapeutic inquiries.
- A PCMH Health Coach for difficult patient management situations.
- Wellness initiatives meeting ACGME duty-hour regulations, allowing residents necessary time away for personal commitments.
- A stipend of $1,800 annually for expenses related to travel, food, lodging for conferences, and research activities.
Community Engagement
The program actively encourages community involvement. Residents engage in numerous outreach initiatives, such as the OhioHealth Wellness on Wheels mobile unit, which serves essential healthcare in underserved neighborhoods.
The residency at OhioHealth Doctors Hospital not only prepares residents for successful medical careers by offering a comprehensive medical education but also instills values of community service and patient care excellence.
Visa Support
The program provides visa support and may sponsor various visa types for eligible international medical graduates, ensuring their participation in the residency training program.
Competitiveness and Application Requirements
Admission to the residency program is competitive, appealing to both DO and IMG candidates. Special application requirements may include specific prerequisites regarding years of graduation and maximum allowable failed STEP exams, enhancing the integrity of the selection process.
