Surgery - Grove City, OH | ACGME Code: 4403832263 | NRMP Code: 1565440C0, 1565440P0
The Mount Carmel Health System General Surgery residency program is a fully-accredited 5-year program designed to prepare residents for the American Board of Surgery examination and Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons. The program is non-pyramidal, with a total of 18 residents: three categorical residents per year and three preliminary interns. The training is based out of Mount Carmel East and Mount Carmel Grove City hospitals, with rotations at other facilities for a diverse experience.
Residents in this program receive a broad operative experience, including training in various surgical specialties such as head and neck, endocrine, trauma, and transplant surgery, among others. Additionally, they have the opportunity to engage in a busy bariatric surgery service that involves open, laparoscopic, and robotic procedures.
During the PGY V year, chief residents run their own service with relative autonomy, providing a valuable transition to independent practice. The program emphasizes an academic curriculum with daily didactic and interactive conferences, complemented by podcasts for flexible learning opportunities.
The residency program fosters a family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, emphasizing professional relationships and friendships among residents and attendings. Residents have significant input into the program direction and application process, contributing to a supportive learning environment.
Application to the General Surgery program is through the NRMP and requires specific documentation such as dean's letter, letters of recommendation, personal statement, USMLE scores, and more. Only 4th-year U.S. medical students are considered for PGY-1 categorical and preliminary positions. The application deadline is November 1st.
The residency program does not sponsor any types of visas. Residents have the opportunity for early operative experiences, mentorship, and a strong academic curriculum aimed at preparing them for successful careers as surgeons.
