Western Reserve Hospital offers a comprehensive 5-year General Surgery residency program accredited by the ACGME. The program aims to develop competent physicians skilled in General Surgery and various surgical techniques. Throughout the training, residents gain experience in a wide range of specialties, including trauma, bariatrics, MIS, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and breast reconstruction.

The curriculum is designed to progressively enhance diagnostic and clinical reasoning skills. Residents participate in various rotations at different hospitals, including UH Cleveland Medical Center, Akron City Hospital, and Shock Trauma in Baltimore. Subspecialty rotations in trauma, vascular, burns, plastic surgery, among others, provide a well-rounded experience.

The program encourages ongoing education through weekly Didactic Education sessions, Journal Club discussions, tumor board meetings, breast cancer conferences, and morbidity/mortality review conferences. Residents also have the opportunity to participate in Grand Rounds on various topics and must take the ABSITE In-Service Exam annually.

Dr. Rick Gemma serves as the Program Director, overseeing the training and development of residents. The faculty includes experienced surgeons specializing in head, neck, plastic surgery, MIS/BAR, general surgery, vascular surgery, and breast surgery, among other areas.

Current residents reflect the program's diversity, representing various medical schools and backgrounds. They are actively involved in patient care and furthering their knowledge in General Surgery.
