Western Reserve Hospital Program

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Western Reserve Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls is designed to train competent and compassionate internists. Program Overview

This ACGME-accredited program participates in the NRMP match and welcomes both allopathic and osteopathic candidates. The hospital aims to create a nurturing setting where residents can thrive, highlighting the importance of integrity, teamwork, and a desire to serve the Northeast Ohio community.1

Application Criteria

Eligibility requires candidates to have graduated from accredited medical schools or colleges, either in the US or Canada, or hold a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate if they graduated from an international institution. For USMLE STEP exams, a minimum passing score of 196 for USMLE Step 1 or 400 for COMLEX Step 1 is required. There are no strict requirements for US clinical experience, and the program does not sponsor visas, accepting candidates with J1 visas only. The expectation is to submit two letters of recommendation but a chair's letter is not mandatory. Candidates with five or fewer postgraduate years post-graduation are preferred.2

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum consists of a core set of rotations during the first year, after which residents can tailor their training based on personal interests. The curriculum includes both inpatient and outpatient experiences, ensuring comprehensiveness in training. Throughout the program, residents engage in various research activities, including mandatory participation in an annual Research EXPO. PGY1 and PGY2 residents are required to complete the GME Research Curriculum, and residents may opt to undertake a quality improvement project, case reports, or literature reviews. Outpatient rotations are generally conducted at faculty outpatient offices located within close proximity to the hospital.

Clinical Rotations

Residents are not obligated to attend outpatient clinics during nocturnal rotations and can adjust their schedule according to their specific training needs. Clinical rotations are carried out primarily at Western Reserve Hospital, with opportunities for additional off-site rotations tailored to the resident's interests.3

Faculty and Leadership

The program is supported by a diverse group of faculty adept in various subspecialties including cardiology, gastroenterology, and infectious diseases. The leadership is experienced and committed to guiding residents through their training.4

Stipends and Benefits

Residents receive a competitive stipend that correlates with their postgraduate year level. For the academic year 2024-2025, various benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance options, as well as malpractice liability coverage. Additionally, residents benefit from a generous educational allowance of $1,500 annually, life support certification courses at no cost, and opportunities for moonlighting for PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents.5
