Summa Health is well established within the Northeast Ohio region and boasts a strong commitment to medical education, facilitated through its collaboration with the Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Curriculum and Rotations

The fellowship curriculum is structured to cover all core cardiovascular disciplines, including noninvasive and interventional cardiology, heart failure, electrophysiology, structural heart disease, population health, cardiovascular imaging, and adult congenital heart disease, often in collaboration with Akron Children’s Hospital. The fellows partake in didactic sessions known as Fellow Conferences that are held during lunch breaks to ensure training is comprehensive while maintaining clinical duties.

The fellow's schedule is designed with a night float system, which allows for adequate rest while on duty. This alleviates the traditional on-call burden and enhances learning opportunities during scheduled rotations. Each fellow participates actively in case presentations, refinement of clinical decision-making skills, and contributes to quality improvement through various committees.

The institute's comprehensive noninvasive cardiology lab conducts a substantial volume of cardiac tests, providing fellows ample exposure to the diagnostic processes essential for effective cardiovascular medicine.

Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

The selection process for the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Summa Health System is highly competitive. Applicants must have successfully completed three years of postgraduate residency training in an ACGME accredited program. It is essential that candidates have also completed both steps of the USMLE or COMLEX examinations. Importantly, international medical graduates who intend to apply must hold a valid ECFMG certificate and may only be considered if they have J-1 visa status.

Applications are processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), and candidates are required to submit their CV, personal statement, and letters of reference, alongside their USMLE score reports. The program does not accept H-1 visa applications.
