The University of Toledo Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship is a comprehensive three-year program accredited by the ACGME, emphasizing a scholarly approach and maintaining high academic standards within cardiology practice. The third year offers fellows the flexibility to pursue specialized electives for up to eight months in various areas such as interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, vascular medicine, and clinical research, providing rich opportunities to tailor the training experience.

Fellows primarily rotate between two major clinical sites: ProMedica Toledo Hospital, an 859-bed facility providing a broad range of acute care, and the University Toledo Medical Center, a 246-bed academic setting known for its commitment to advanced care and teaching. The clinical rotation encompasses a combination of inpatient and outpatient experiences, delivering a comprehensive training paradigm in cardiovascular medicine.

The curriculum includes weekly educational conferences such as cath conferences, structural heart conferences, and monthly journal clubs, promoting continuous learning and skill reinforcement. Additionally, fellows engage in cutting-edge training at the Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center, which features a dynamic environment designed to mimic real-world medical scenarios.

Research Opportunities

Fellows are encouraged to participate in research activities as part of their training. They have dedicated time within their schedules to develop research proposals or contribute to publication efforts, which bolsters their academic portfolio and enhances their fellowship experience.

Application Requirements and Competitiveness

The program accepts applications exclusively through ERAS, with a strict selection criterion that includes completion of an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency and a prior cardiology fellowship for the interventional program. Candidates need to submit a personal statement, three letters of recommendation, and USMLE transcripts among other documentation. Notably, the program sponsors J-1 visas, providing the necessary support for international medical graduates, while H-1B visas are not sponsored. Given these requirements, applicants must be prepared for a highly competitive selection process.
