Overview of the Rheumatology Fellowship Program

The Rheumatology Fellowship Program at the University of Toledo is a comprehensive two-year, ACGME-accredited program that prepares trainees for careers in both academic medicine and community practice. The program aims to provide rigorous clinical and research training, ultimately equipping fellows with the skills needed to practice proficiently as consultants in rheumatology. The faculty at the University of Toledo comprises accomplished physicians who are dedicated to meeting the educational needs of their fellows in a supportive and collegial environment.

This program selects up to two fellows each year. During the first year, the emphasis is on clinical training in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The second year allows for greater focus on clinical and investigational research, providing protected time for fellows to conduct research based on their individual interests.

Curriculum

The curriculum is carefully designed to include a wide range of clinical experiences that enable fellows to evaluate and manage various rheumatic diseases. A robust didactic component complements the clinical training and covers essential topics such as clinical skills, basic science, immunology, radiology, as well as pathophysiology and management of rheumatic diseases. The program includes core curriculum series on a weekly basis to ensure comprehensive educational experiences for the fellows.

Accreditation

The program is recognized by the American Board of Internal Medicine and fulfills all training requirements as prescribed by the ACGME.

Application Process

Applicants should submit applications through the ERAS application system and are encouraged to apply early to facilitate scheduling interviews. The program welcomes applications from board-eligible or board-certified internal medicine physicians, with an emphasis on United States citizens and J1 visa holders. At present, the University of Toledo cannot sponsor H1-B visas.

The fellowship program at the University of Toledo is competitive; however, it has shown to be friendly for DO graduates and International Medical Graduates (IMGs).

Financial Support for Conferences

Fellows are encouraged to attend reputable national meetings such as the American College of Rheumatology annual meeting, with the program offering financial support for travel and lodging expenses. Each fellow is reimbursed up to $1,500 for attending one meeting per year, fostering their participation in professional development opportunities.
