The program emphasizes a community-based approach, enabling residents to work closely with faculty and subspecialists, enhancing their learning experience through meaningful mentorship and teamwork.
Training Environment: Residents benefit from a collaborative atmosphere characterized by hands-on clinical practice and supportive educational interactions. The program's faculty are committed to fostering a nurturing learning environment, ensuring residents develop the necessary skills to excel in a variety of medical contexts. The supportive culture has been highlighted by current residents, showcasing the program's dedication to both personal and professional growth. Multiple opportunities for feedback and nurturing relationships within a collegial environment allow residents to thrive.
Curriculum Structure: The internal medicine residency program consists of a structured curriculum that combines clinical rotations, hands-on education, and academic training. Rotation schedules generally consist of three weeks of day shifts followed by one week of night shifts, ensuring comprehensive exposure to different medical scenarios. Training includes daily attending rounds and protected didactic time (noon to 1 p.m.) for lectures and case discussions, integral to the learning process. Residents rotate through various specialties, including cardiology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, and infectious disease, among others, allowing them to develop a broad skill set essential for their future careers.
Research and Education: The program emphasizes research and encourages residents to engage in scholarly activities, including a resident research project as part of their educational experience. There are also opportunities for participation in board review sessions and case study demonstrations, fostering an environment of continuous learning. Additionally, a simulation curriculum is integrated, providing residents with the chance to practice acute care scenarios, enhancing procedural skills in a state-of-the-art simulation lab.
Elective Rotations: Residents can partake in elective rotations tailored to their individual interests, with away rotations allowed in various subspecialties. This flexibility in elective planning empowers residents to focus on areas they are passionate about, enabling a more personalized educational experience.
PTO and Wellbeing: The program offers 20 days of paid time off (PTO) annually, ensuring residents have adequate time for rest and personal commitments. Moreover, a strong emphasis on resident wellness is maintained, with access to both national and hospital-specific support resources aimed at ensuring physical and mental well-being throughout the demanding residency period.
Salary and Benefits: Residents receive competitive stipends based on their training year, beginning at $65,817 for PGY-1 and increasing with each subsequent year. Benefits include comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, educational funds for study materials, lab coats provided by the program, and various professional insurance coverages. Residents also receive reimbursement for presentation-related travel expenses provided they are approved by the Program Director.
Application Process: The UHCC Internal Medicine Residency specifically accepts PGY-1 applications via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), with a focus on highly qualified candidates. While the program is competitive, it aims to foster a diverse and inclusive atmosphere, welcoming both DOs and IMGs into its community. The program does not accept applications that require ECFMG, J-1, or H-1B visa sponsorship, which may be an important consideration for international applicants.
Living in Cleveland: Residents often express appreciation for the vibrant culture and community atmosphere of Cleveland. With an array of dining, entertainment, and outdoor activities, the city offers an enriching lifestyle that extends beyond medical training.
