The MetroHealth System/Case Western Reserve University Programin Internal Medicine is dedicated to training clinicians, scholars,educators, and future leaders in a supportive and diverseenvironment. History and Mission

MetroHealth Medical Center, a major affiliate of Case WesternReserve University School of Medicine, has a long-standingtradition in medical education since its founding in the early1900s. The mission of the Internal Medicine Residency Program is toproduce well-trained internists who can adapt and thrive in variousmedical environments while providing compassionate care,particularly to underserved populations.1

Curriculum and Rotations

The residency program is structured with a comprehensive andstructured curriculum that includes diverse clinical experiences.Specifically, the Categorical Track follows a 4+1 schedule whereevery four weeks of inpatient medicine is followed by a weekdevoted to outpatient clinic experiences, didactic learning, andsimulation-based training.

Interns experience care in a variety of settings, includinggeneral medical floors and specialized units supervised by expertfaculty in cardiology, pulmonary, critical care, and more. Asresidents progress, they take on increasing responsibility,culminating in supervisory roles in their third year, where theylead inpatient teams and mentor medical students.2

The curriculum incorporates numerous educational components suchas:

• Noon Didactics covering essential topics in internalmedicine.
• Morbidity & Mortality Conferences aimed at collaborativelearning.
• Quality Improvement projects where PGY2 residents work inteams.
• Journal Clubs led by PGY2 residents to develop critical reviewskills.
• Wellness Curriculum focusing on resilience andself-care.3

Specialized Tracks

The program offers various specialized tracks, including:

• Leadership in Medical Education Pathway(LMEP): Aimed at training clinician-educators throughintensive instruction in medical education principles inpartnership with the Weatherhead School of Management.
• Primary Care of Vulnerable Populations Track(PCVP): Focused on training primary care physicians toserve underserved communities, featuring a blend of outpatientrotations and preventive care strategies.
• Clinical Informatics Certificate Program:Provides exposure to clinical informatics, enhancing residents’skills in electronic health records and datamanagement.4

Research Opportunities

The MetroHealth residency prides itself on a robust researchculture, with access to dedicated biostatistician support, anintegrated EMR system (Epic), and opportunities to participate inboth clinical and bench research. Residents are encouraged topresent their findings at national conferences, supported throughfinancial resources and training workshops.5

Application Process and Requirements

The application process is conducted through the ElectronicResidency Application Service (ERAS), and potential applicants musthave completed their medical education within the last 5 years.Required application materials include:

• USMLE Step or COMLEX scores.
• Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE).
• At least three letters of recommendation.
• A minimum of three months of clinical experience in the US orCanada.

Additionally, the program sponsors J-1 and H-1B visas on acase-by-case basis, making it accessible to international medicalgraduates.6
