Welcome to the Cleveland Clinic Internal Medicine Residency Program at South Pointe, an ACGME-accredited three-year categorical program distinguished by its additional Osteopathic Recognition. This program, a part of the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, has a rich history in osteopathic education since its inception in 1959. The mission is to provide the highest quality training and opportunities to nurture outstanding physicians.

Clinical Experience

The residency program offers a robust clinical experience through a variety of rotations across multiple campuses, including the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, Fairview Campus, and South Pointe Campus. This diverse clinical exposure ensures that residents encounter a broad spectrum of pathologies within both the general floors and ICU at South Pointe Hospital. Residents also engage in continuity of care through a resident clinic, allowing hands-on experience with a stable patient population. Furthermore, a half-day each week is dedicated to practicing Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Therapy (OMMT), which helps enhance the skills required for comprehensive patient care.

Curriculum and Didactics

The education structure of the program includes dedicated didactic sessions that occur every weekday, similar to medical school lectures. These sessions primarily focus on board preparation and feature interactive elements such as case discussions, Jeopardy-style games, and MKSAP question-and-answer formats. Senior residents benefit from additional half-days each week specifically for further board preparation, ensuring they are well-prepared for their future exams.

Research Opportunities

Research is an integral part of the residency, offering numerous collaborations with renowned researchers across the Cleveland Clinic Health System. The Brentwood Foundation at South Pointe Hospital provides grants to support resident research endeavors, with one half-day every week reserved for research activities during the senior year. This emphasis on research not only enriches the educational experience but enhances the alumni's accomplishments, reflecting the quality of the training provided.

Resident Life and Wellness

The program places a strong emphasis on resident wellness and work-life balance, dedicating an entire clinic half-day for residents to utilize as they see fit. The supportive environment encourages open communication of needs and fosters professional relationships among residents through organized events. Activities include cooking classes, TopGolf outings, canoeing, and barbecuing, which help in building camaraderie.

Application Process

The residency program accepts applications solely through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). A successful application entails the submission of several critical documents, including the ERAS Common Application Form, Curriculum Vitae, Dean’s Letter, a minimum of three Letters of Recommendation, a Personal Statement, a leadership photograph, medical school transcripts, and USMLE or COMLEX transcripts. To be competitive, a strong recommendation to submit applications by the end of September is urged due to the rapid filling of interview slots.

Minimum Application Criteria

To be considered for the program, potential candidates must meet specific criteria: successful completion of all licensing exams on their first attempt, submission of the Step 1 transcript with the application, and the Step 2 transcript by June 1. All appointees must also be prepared to begin training responsibilities by July 1 and report for orientation during the last two weeks of June. Candidates are required to have completed all preclinical courses on their first attempt and obtained a minimum PASS grade in all core clerkships, with at least a High Pass in the Medicine Clerkship.
