Dermatology - Jackson, MS | ACGME Code: 0802700001 | NRMP Code: 1957080A0
The University of Mississippi Medical Center offers a three-year Dermatology Residency Program. The program requires a minimum of one year of broad-based training at an ACGME-approved program before the three-year dermatology residency. This preliminary year can be either categorical training in Internal Medicine or Pediatrics, or preliminary/transitional training involving primary care specialties with broad rotations.
During the first year of residency, residents focus on general and medical dermatology, including exposure to Pediatric Dermatology, Procedural Dermatology, and Cosmetic Dermatology. There are no specialty rotations during the first year, and residents have one-month blocks rotating through different clinic locations. Consultation service rotations and weekend call start after four months.
In the second year, residents spend time in Dermatopathology, Procedural Dermatology (Mohs), Pediatric Dermatology, General and Medical Dermatology, and Consultation Service. The emphasis is on outpatient clinics, in-patient/consultation service, pediatric dermatology, surgery/cosmetic dermatology, and dermatopathology. Second-year residents also continue with their continuity clinic and take home call.
The third year includes rotations in Procedural Dermatology, Dermatopathology, Pediatric Dermatology, General and Medical Dermatology, Consultation Service, Contact Dermatitis/Patch Testing, and an elective month. Senior residents are assigned independent patient calendars, manage EHR and patient correspondence, and run the procedure clinic.
Throughout the program, residents have research and quality assurance project requirements, teaching responsibilities, and the preparation for board examinations. An elective month is included in the final year, offering opportunities for training within or outside the medical center.
UMMC Dermatology residents also hold a virtual Open House to provide more information about the program to interested applicants.
