The Lake Granbury Medical Center's Dermatology Residency Program is designed to provide a comprehensive and rigorous training in dermatology, with a focus on developing competent and compassionate dermatologists ready to make a difference in the community and the profession. The Dermatology residency program at Lake Granbury Medical Center is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME ID: 0804800001; NRMP Program Code: 2335080R0). Aimed at training the next generation of dermatologists, the program emphasizes a combination of didactic learning and hands-on clinical experience. Curriculum Structure

The curriculum is structured over three years (PGY2 to PGY4) and involves extensive clinical rotations paired with didactic sessions. During the first year (PGY2), residents will rotate primarily through general dermatology at Bare Dermatology and Cockerell Dermatopathology, under the mentorship of established faculty such as Dr. William Abramovits and Dr. Clay Cockerell. This year also includes dermatopathology rotations and consultations in various hospitals.

In the second year (PGY3), residents continue their training in general dermatology while adding surgical dermatology rotations and pediatric dermatology consults at Cook Children's Medical Center. They will further enrich their experience through specialized training in cosmetic dermatology.

The third year (PGY4) includes advanced clinical responsibilities, where residents consolidate their existing skills while continuing to expose themselves to intricate cases across various settings. This year also requires residents to undertake aesthetic dermatological practices.

Rotations and Clinical Training Sites

Primary clinical training happens within the Dallas Southwestern Medical District, where residents engage with a rich diversity of cases. The residents’ continuity clinic is embedded at Bare Dermatology, facilitating uninterrupted patient care experience. In addition to clinical rotations, opportunities to engage with faculty in complex medical dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, and surgical dermatology enhance the educational experience.

Research Opportunities

Residents are encouraged to engage in research initiatives, which are supported by the Faculty Development Center at the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center. Participation in local, regional, and national dermatology conferences is facilitated, ensuring that residents stay abreast of the latest advancements in the field.

Application Process and Competitiveness

Applicants to the Dermatology Residency are selected based on their preparedness, academic credentials, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. The program is competitive, welcoming applications from both U.S. and international medical graduates, although it does not currently sponsor visas. Applicants must have relevant U.S. clinical experience, with the program encouraging a robust application package including letters of recommendation and a personal statement.

Visa Support and Special Requirements

While the program does not sponsor visa applications for international medical graduates, it is advised for applicants to have sufficient U.S. clinical experience. Specific requirements include passing USMLE Step 1/COMLEX Level 1 by the second attempt and preferred scores of around 230 on USMLE Step 2 or equivalent for COMLEX. Graduation dates should ideally allow for continuous training, with consideration given for those who completed PGY1 within a year of application.
