The Family Medicine Residency at McAllen Medical Center, affiliated with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), focuses on providing evidence-based primary care to patients of all ages in South Texas. The program emphasizes care for pregnant women, children, and older adults through supervised patient care experiences, clinical teaching, and didactic activities.

Residents in this program work directly with attending physicians in various specialties, including emergency medicine, critical care, surgery, and radiology. They are involved in an active inpatient family medicine service to develop skills in caring for acutely ill patients. Opportunities for advanced obstetrical care and surgical techniques are also available due to experienced faculty in surgical obstetrics.

Application to the UTRGV Family Medicine-MMC Residency Program requires candidates to have graduated from an accredited medical school acceptable to the Texas Medical Board, passed USMLE Steps 1 and 2 CK or COMLEX, and meet specific requirements set by the Texas Medical Board. International medical graduates must hold a current ECFMG certificate and meet eligibility for licensure in Texas.

The program offers 6 PGY1 positions each academic year. The application deadline is December 1, 2022, through ERAS. Interviews are held from late October through November. The curriculum spans three years and includes rotations in various specialties.

For further information about the program, applicants can contact Vickie Rangel via email at [email protected]. The program aims to train excellent family medicine physicians who will practice in Texas, particularly in underserved areas of the state.
