South Texas Health System GME Consortium Program

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at South Texas Health System GME Consortium, a new ACGME-accredited community-based program located in Hidalgo County, Texas. The program is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of physicians through a comprehensive and engaging educational experience aimed at serving the medically underserved population of the Rio Grande Valley.

The program is set to welcome its inaugural class of 20 residents annually, ultimately accommodating a total of 60 residents. Training will occur at multiple South Texas Health System facilities, including McAllen, Edinburg, Heart, and Behavioral Health, all recognized for their commitment to cutting-edge patient care.

Curriculum

The residency curriculum is designed to promote self-sufficient clinical practice through rigorous training. Resident rotations include a mix of inpatient and outpatient services, which are essential for broad clinical exposure. Notably, the curriculum incorporates point-of-care ultrasound training and guarantees dedicated time for didactics, ensuring a continuous learning environment.

A sample rotation schedule for residents includes diverse specialties such as:

• Inpatient Ward at STHS McAllen and STHS Edinburg
• Continuity Clinic at ASAS Health Closner
• Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Neurology, Nephrology, and various elective opportunities

This structure supports a detailed and practical approach to internal medicine training, preparing residents for board certification and independent practice.

Requirements and Application Process

Applicants for the Internal Medicine Residency Program must meet specific eligibility criteria, including being either a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The program does not currently sponsor visas. Important application documents include the ERAS Common Application Form, curriculum vitae, medical school transcripts, and a minimum of three letters of recommendation, among others.

The selection process is rigorous, with applicants needing to match specific requirements such as graduating from an accredited medical school, possessing a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate if applicable, and achieving passing scores on licensing exams within designated attempts.
