The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center offers a unique Neurology-Psychiatry Combined Residency Program that confers board eligibility in both neurology and psychiatry upon completion. Led by Co-Program Directors Dr. Adam Brenner and Dr. Lauren Phillips, along with Associate Program Director Dr. Molly Camp, the combined program was approved by the ABPN and ACGME in 2016.
This six-year combined residency program aims to develop clinicians, educators, and researchers who will be leaders in psychiatry, neurology, and their integration. The curriculum includes a preliminary year in internal medicine followed by dedicated years to neurology and psychiatry.
Graduates of the program have the flexibility to diagnose and manage a wide range of neurologic and psychiatric conditions. The program also supports a Research Track, allowing residents to spend 50 percent of their time on research during the final two years of residency.
Residents train at diverse training sites, including the Veteran's Administration, Parkland County Hospital, William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, Metrocare Services, Terrell State Hospital, Lew Sterrett County Jail, Children's Health Dallas, and Scottish Rite for Children.
Additionally, UT Southwestern provides opportunities for fellows in various specialties including Addiction Psychiatry, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Behavioral Neurology, Epilepsy, Neuromuscular Disorders, and many more.
For those interested in the program, UT Southwestern hosts a visiting student elective in Neuropsychiatry for 4th-year medical students, providing exposure to various clinical settings at the interface of neurology and psychiatry.
