The Cytopathology Fellowship at the University of Virginia Medical Center is designed to create proficient cytopathologists through a detailed educational experience focusing on patient care and laboratory diagnostics. This comprehensive program is centered on hands-on experience, assisting in the training of residents, and a substantial commitment to studying diverse cytopathological cases.

Program Structure

The fellowship is structured over the course of one year with a focus on various aspects of cytopathology, including the evaluation of abnormal Pap tests, fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) specimens, and body cavity fluid specimens. During the fellowship, participants are expected to engage deeply with diagnostic processes. They initially train under supervision before independently evaluating FNAB specimens, gradually taking on more responsibility as they achieve competence.

About 15% of the fellow's time is devoted to surgical pathology consult service, enhancing skills that contribute to a well-rounded approach to cytopathology. Fellows participate in didactic lectures from faculty and peer-led journal clubs and sessions focusing on unknown cases.

Educational Opportunities

The program includes various educational methods such as online teaching modules, hands-on training in the HPV and cytology laboratories, and research activities, which, while encouraged, are not mandatory. The goal is for fellows to gain extensive knowledge in laboratory management, the interpretation of diagnostic results, and familiarity with federal regulations governing cytopathology laboratories.

Research and Clinical Responsibility

Fellows are encouraged to engage in departmental research activities. While participation in research is not required, those who do often find that it enriches their understanding and application of cytopathology.

Application Process

Applicants are required to possess an MD degree or equivalent qualifications, with ECFMG certification if applicable. Additionally, being board-eligible or certified in anatomic pathology is a prerequisite. The program accepts two fellows per year, with no positions currently available for the upcoming cycle. Candidates must submit a CAP Fellowship Application, current CV, letters of recommendation, personal statement, medical school transcripts, and USMLE transcripts electronically. Application submissions open on July 1, twenty-four months before the intended start date.
