Cytopathology Fellowship Overview

The Cytopathology Fellowship at West Virginia University is a comprehensive one-year training program focusing on the microscopic examination of cells from various body sites to understand the causes and nature of diseases. The program emphasizes diagnostic criteria and laboratory techniques for both gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytopathology, ensuring fellows gain extensive knowledge and skills in the field.

During the fellowship, fellows engage in case evaluations from a wide range of anatomical sites and develop proficiency in integrating clinical histories with morphologic findings. Additionally, the curriculum includes hands-on experience in rapid on-site evaluations of intraprocedural specimens through techniques such as endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) directed at the pancreas.

Fellows participate in performing fine needle aspirations of superficial body sites, working closely with clinicians to enhance their procedural skills. The training also encompasses ancillary studies including flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and molecular studies. Furthermore, fellows spend dedicated time in the cytopathology laboratory to become adept at common preparatory techniques, strengthening their understanding of the practical aspects of cytopathology.

Application Requirements

To apply for the Cytopathology Fellowship, candidates must be board eligible in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. A West Virginia state license is required prior to admission into the program. Applications must include the following:

Applications are accepted from July 1 to September 30 each year, with interviews conducted between August 15 and November 30. Offers are extended starting October 1.
