Program Overview

The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at West Virginia University is a comprehensive three-year post-graduate training program that is accredited by ACGME. The program accepts four fellows each year, focusing on training competent, compassionate, and knowledgeable physicians in the specialized field of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Training is conducted at the JW Ruby Memorial Hospital, a significant 690-bed referral center, as well as the Louis A. Johnson Veteran Affairs Medical Center.

The fellowship's mission is to groom physicians who are not only skilled in their clinical practice but are also advocates for their patients and leaders in their communities. In pursuit of this mission, the program offers extensive training that spans all pulmonary medicine subspecialties and emphasizes both individualized education and the importance of lifelong learning.

Curriculum and Rotations

The fellowship includes a detailed curriculum that provides diverse rotations across various settings:

• MICU Rotations: Fellows participate in two ICU teams and alternate nightly admissions, managing patient care in collaboration with emergency departments and medicine patients.
• Night Float and Ambulatory Services: Night float rotations consist of in-house coverage from 7 PM to 7 AM, with fellows experiencing both inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Veterans Affairs Rotation: This one-month rotation provides exposure to inpatient consults, ICU management, and procedures within the local VA hospital.
• Electives: Fellows are provided opportunities to select elective rotations which may include Thoracic Surgery, SICU, Neurology ICU, and more.

Moreover, fellows engage in a substantial number of procedures throughout their training, including intubation, bronchoscopy, and endobronchial ultrasound. There is also a structured program for clinical research participation, allowing fellows to develop and complete various research projects.

Research Opportunities

Research plays a critical role in the fellowship, with fellows selecting one or more projects to undertake throughout their training. There are robust opportunities available for basic science research in collaboration with faculty from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Department of Public Health. Each fellow is expected to collaborate closely with mentors to enhance both their academic and practical skills.

Scholarly activity is highly encouraged, and fellows are supported to present their research at national conferences, with funds provided for travel and registration. The program also features regular research conferences to foster collaboration and continuous learning among fellows.

Conferences and Didactics

The division emphasizes a strong educational foundation with an array of didactic lectures and conferences that are held weekly and monthly. Examples include:

Application Process

The fellowship program admits candidates through the NRMP Match, with applications submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Key requirements for a complete application include the ERAS Application Form, medical school transcripts, board scores, personal statement, MSPE, and a minimum of three letters of recommendation. The program exclusively sponsors J-1 visas and does not support H-1b visa applications. Candidates must be board-eligible in Internal Medicine to be considered for the fellowship.
