The University of Virginia Medical Center Program offers an Interventional Radiology Integrated Residency program that was initiated in 2012. The program is ACGME accredited and replaced the original Vascular and Interventional Radiology (VIR) track. It is a 6-year residency program with a Fundamental Clinical Skills (FCS) year at UVA Health, making the program categorical. The curriculum provides a comprehensive clinical experience in the diagnosis and care of patients treated by interventional radiologists. Residents also have the opportunity to engage in research to advance vascular and interventional radiology.
The program's educational mission focuses on providing residents with the necessary tools to perform a wide array of minimally invasive procedures in various practice settings, while continuously enhancing their skills and knowledge in the field. The program boasts state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including 8 procedure rooms with advanced imaging capabilities.
Residents in the IR Integrated Residency program can expect exposure to various interventional radiology procedures, including oncology treatments, arterial and venous interventions, vascular surgeries, dialysis access management, biliary procedures, trauma interventions, and pediatric IR procedures. Additionally, residents have rotations in the "AngioClinic" to gain experience in different clinical settings.
The program also offers the opportunity to pursue a Dual Certificate in Interventional Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology upon successfully passing the ABR Core and Certifying exams. For diagnostic radiology residents interested in early specialization in interventional radiology, there is the ESIR pathway.
Applicants to the program are required to submit various documents, including their MyERAS application, medical school transcript, letters of recommendation, USMLE scores, curriculum vitae, and more. The program conducts virtual interviews, and they offer three categorical IR residency positions each year.
The University of Virginia Medical Center sponsors the J1 clinical visa for international medical graduates. Residents can expect a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, along with opportunities for social activities, field trips, and cultural events both in Charlottesville and nearby areas. The program also emphasizes diversity and community among its residents.
