The Neuropathology Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health System is a two-year program designed to provide advanced training in all aspects of neuropathology. The program aims to prepare fellows for board certification and cultivates a successful career in academic neuropathology.

The fellowship encompasses extensive training in the diagnosis of a wide range of diseases affecting the nervous system, skeletal muscle, peripheral nerve, and eye. Fellows will gain diagnostic proficiency through rigorous morphologic examination and ancillary techniques, including immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and molecular analysis.

Curriculum

The curriculum involves both practical and didactic components, emphasizing clinical and translational research with a focus on neuro-oncology. The fellows will work closely with experienced faculty members and have ample opportunities to engage in research projects that contribute to the ongoing development of neuropathology.

Training Environment

Fellows are provided with a supportive learning environment at VCU Health, where they can benefit from the resources available within the division and the larger institution. The program encourages multidisciplinary collaboration and active participation in clinical discussions as well as tumor boards.

Research Opportunities

Research is a key aspect of the Neuropathology Fellowship, with a strong emphasis on neuro-oncology. The program encourages fellows to pursue clinical and basic science research that may result in presentations at national meetings, publications, and other scholarly activities.

Visa and Sponsorship

The VCU Neuropathology Fellowship supports international applicants and provides sponsorship for the J-1 Clinical visa. Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must be prepared to obtain the necessary visa status to participate in the program.

Competitiveness

The Neuropathology Fellowship is highly competitive, attracting applicants with a strong academic background and relevant training. Preference is given to candidates who demonstrate a commitment to a two-year training period, although other arrangements may be made on an individual basis.

Application Requirements

Applicants must fulfill certain criteria to be considered for the fellowship:

  • Completion of at least two years of post-graduate training (preferably two years of anatomic pathology).
  • One year of clinical training in neurology or neurosurgery is an acceptable substitute.
  • Successful completion of USMLE Step 3 is mandatory.

All application materials must be submitted by the specified deadlines, and it is recommended that candidates provide a detailed curriculum vitae, a personal statement outlining their interest in neuropathology, and three letters of recommendation (one from the residency program director).

Recruitment Status

As of now, the fellowships are filled until the 2025-2027 academic year. However, applications for the 2027-2029 academic year will be accepted starting June of 2025, allowing potential candidates to prepare in advance for the application process.
