The Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is a distinguished three-year program accredited by ACGME. The program is located in Richmond, Virginia, where fellows engage in clinical training at the VCU Medical Campus, a quaternary academic medical center, and the Richmond VA Medical Center (VAMC), a tertiary care VA hospital featuring a new state-of-the-art ICU. This dual-campus training structure offers interns exposure to advanced simulation facilities enhancing their skills in bronchoscopy, airway management, bedside ultrasound, and critical care procedures.

Cohort Structure and Competitiveness

The fellowship aims to accommodate 15 fellows, increasing from 12, thereby providing a robust clinical experience that also promotes research and mentorship throughout the program. Curriculum Overview

The first year is primarily clinical, focusing on foundational aspects of pulmonary and critical care medicine through rotations in medical ICUs and pulmonary consult services, including interventional pulmonary and pulmonary hypertension services. The second and third years refine this knowledge, facilitating opportunities for personalized educational experiences through electives and research projects. This tailored approach allows fellows to cultivate their specific career interests.

Rotations

The fellowship encompasses a variety of rotations, including:

• Pulmonary Consults: Fellows participate in consult services at VCU and the VAMC, performing inpatient and outpatient procedures and interpreting pulmonary function tests.
• Interventional Pulmonary: Exposure to various advanced interventional techniques and procedures, featuring a comprehensive mentorship model.
• Critical Care Rotations: Fellows engage in intensive care settings, including the MRICU and specialty ICUs such as the CICU and STICU, where they develop hands-on experience in complex cases.
• Electives: Opportunities to rotate through areas such as sleep medicine, thoracic surgery, pulmonary rehab, and global health, further enhancing training diversity.

Research and Scholarship

All fellows are encouraged to actively engage in scholarly activities, which encompass basic to clinical research, including health outcomes research. Dedicated funding is allocated for fellows to present their work at regional, national, and international conferences. Application Requirements

Candidates are required to have completed an MD, DO, or MBBS and possess a minimum of three years of internal medicine residency training in an accredited program. Successful completion of USMLE Step 3 is necessary prior to fellowship acceptance. Applicants must present the following materials:
