The Complex General Surgical Oncology Residency Program at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System offers a robust training curriculum that is grounded in clinical excellence and the principles of evidence-based medicine. This program is hosted at VCU Medical Center, which serves as a regional leader in surgical care and a high-volume academic medical center. The residency provides residents with an intensive, hands-on clinical experience and is designed to produce competent and confident surgeons.
1This program emphasizes a blend of clinical training, didactic learning, and research opportunities, aiming to prepare residents for high-stakes environments in surgical oncology.
4Curriculum and Rotations
The residency curriculum is structured to provide comprehensive education across various surgical specialties, with a particular focus on oncology. Residents engage in a diverse range of rotations starting from their first year, allowing for extensive exposure to surgical oncology, trauma, transplant, colorectal, and vascular surgery.
3Each year builds upon the previous one:
- PGY-1: Focus on perioperative care with rotations in basic surgery, including trauma, burn, and transplant surgery.
- PGY-2: Increased operating room experience, targeting at least 250 cases by the end of the year, encompassing general surgery, pediatrics, and thoracic surgery.
- PGY-3: Engagement in advanced surgical procedures and educational responsibilities, including community-based experiences.
- PGY-4 and PGY-5: Chief resident responsibilities, mentoring junior residents and taking leadership roles in surgical services.
Didactic Education
The didactic component is integral to the educational experience. Weekly sessions are held on Thursday mornings, including case conferences, Grand Rounds, and resident-led discussions based on the SCORE curriculum. Residents also participate in specialized educational sessions to prepare for board exams.
7Mock oral exams and ABSITE preparation are critical components of the training, providing residents with opportunities to assess their knowledge and readiness.
8Research Opportunities
Residents are encouraged to participate in research during their training, with opportunities to explore interests in Basic Science, Clinical Research, Quality Systems Research, and Global Surgery. Many residents opt to dedicate one or two years to research projects, often resulting in publications and presentations.
9Collaborative research initiatives and access to state-of-the-art facilities enhance the academic environment, preparing residents for future careers in both clinical and academic medicine.
10Training Sites
The residency program is hosted at VCU Medical Center, which is a Level 1 tertiary care facility. Residents also rotate through affiliated hospitals including:
- Children's Hospital of Richmond: Offers extensive pediatric surgical training.
- Central Virginia VA Medical Center: Provides experience in general, vascular, and trauma surgery.
- Winchester Medical Center: Facilitates exposure to rural surgery and community hospital settings.
