AdventHealth Florida (Orlando) Program

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at AdventHealth Orlando is a meticulously designed, one-year ACGME-accredited program, aimed at training distinguished leaders in interventional cardiology. The program is committed to developing clinical and technical proficiency in cardiovascular medicine, alongside an emphasis on evidence-based compassionate care.

Program Goals

The mission of the program includes preparing fellows to be influential leaders who will contribute substantially to patient outcomes and shape the future of cardiovascular medicine. The program focuses on immersive training, utilizing the expertise of its distinguished faculty and the extensive resources available at the AdventHealth Orlando campus.

Core Curriculum

The fellowship's educational framework is based on the Six Core Competencies which are Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning, Interpersonal Communication Skills, Professionalism, and Systems-Based Practice. Through these competencies, fellows will gain insight and exposure to a broad spectrum of cardiovascular diseases, including:

• Chronic coronary artery disease
• Acute coronary syndromes
• Valvular heart disease
• Congestive heart failure and cardiogenic shock
• Peripheral vascular disease
• Cardiology and cardiac arrhythmias

Clinical Training

The training regimen encompasses comprehensive clinical experiences that allow fellows to diagnose, select therapies, perform interventional procedures, and manage both inpatients and outpatients effectively. The program ensures that fellows have continuous responsibility for both acutely and chronically ill patients, guiding them through the natural history of cardiac conditions while assimilating scientific knowledge.

Clinical Rotations and Opportunities

Fellows are primarily assigned to the AdventHealth Orlando campus, which boasts a fully equipped 1,300-bed tertiary care facility featuring six dedicated cardiac catheterization laboratories. The program averages about 6,000 procedures annually, of which over 1,200 constitute percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). The program also provides opportunities for exposure to peripheral vascular angiography and intervention, alongside training related to structural heart disease interventions.

Faculty and Support

The fellowship is supervised and mentored by an experienced faculty, comprising interventional cardiologists and specialists who play an active role in the clinical and academic advancement of the fellows. This includes hands-on training in state-of-the-art clinical skills and surgical techniques.

Research and Academic Activities

The program fosters an academic setting with a strong emphasis on research. Fellows are encouraged to engage in scholarly activities, participate in clinical trials, contribute to publications, and present findings at national and international conferences.

Application Requirements

To apply for the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship, candidates must have completed an ACGME-accredited cardiovascular disease training program or its equivalent. Each application should include:

• A completed ERAS application
• Personal statement
• Curriculum Vitae
• Medical school diploma
• Passing scores on all three steps of the USMLE
• Three letters of recommendation, including one from the program director

Eligibility and Competitiveness

The program is considered highly competitive, welcoming applicants from both MD and DO backgrounds, as well as International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who meet the necessary certification and training requirements. The occasional sponsorship for work visas (H-1B) is available to qualified candidates.
