The Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at AdventHealth Orlando is designed to provide comprehensive training for physicians who aspire to specialize in the field of critical care. Located in a facility with over 1400 beds, AdventHealth Orlando is one of the largest medical centers in the country, offering a robust educational experience through diverse clinical exposure and extensive mentorship opportunities from experienced faculty in critical care.

Training Facilities and Rotations

The fellowship offers unique opportunities through its various intensive care units (ICUs). AdventHealth Orlando features seven adult ICUs, encompassing 180 adult ICU beds, which allow fellows to engage with a diverse patient population and a wide range of pathology:

• Medical ICU (MICU): The MICU consists of 20 beds and provides care for a mix of medical and cardiac patients. Fellows work alongside critical care attendings and have the chance to teach residents and medical students.
• Multispecialty ICU: This 20 bed unit focuses on liver cases and other oncology-related conditions.
• Cardiac ICU (CICU): The CICU includes 20 beds for patients with cardiac conditions. Fellows will gain exposure to advanced cardiac support devices.
• Cardiovascular Surgery ICU (CVICU): In this 28 bed ICU, fellows will learn management post-general cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures.
• Advanced Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit: This 32 bed ICU handles complex cases including those related to heart and lung transplantation.
• Neurosurgical ICU (NSICU): The 40 bed NSICU is tailored for neurocritical care, managing critically ill patients with neurological issues.
• Surgical ICU (SICU): This 20 bed facility focuses on post-operative care, particularly for organ transplant patients.

Curriculum Structure

The fellowship has a structured, two-year program divided into 13 blocks per year. Fellows spend substantial time in the ICUs with additional rotations through surgical selectives and electives to tailor their education to specific interests:

Year 1 Rotations:

• 6-7 blocks in medical/cardiac ICUs
• 1 block in SICU
• 1 block in NSICU
• 1 block in ACSU
• 1 block in CVICU
• 1 block in Trauma ICU
• Remaining blocks dedicated to electives

Year 2 Rotations:

• 6 blocks in medical/cardiac ICUs
• 1 block in Trauma ICU
• 1 block in CVICU
• 2 blocks of surgical selectives
• Remaining blocks allocated for electives

Research Opportunities

AdventHealth places significant emphasis on research as part of the fellowship program. The Center for Academic Research Excellence (CARE) provides vital support in scholarly activities, including guidance in study design, data analysis, and preparation for presentations at national conferences. Application and Eligibility

The fellowship is open to graduates of accredited internal medicine or emergency medicine residency programs. Additional applicants, including those completing intern year training, may also be considered. Typical requirements include:

• Completed ERAS application including a CV, letters of recommendation, USMLE/COMLEX scores, and a personal statement.
• Acceptable applicants must have graduated from medical school within the last five years and must be board-eligible or certified in their respective fields.
