Albany Med Health System Program

The Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency program at Albany Medical College is a six-year, ACGME-accredited training program aimed at providing residents with comprehensive training in interventional radiology. The program is designed to ensure that trainees achieve a high level of proficiency in all types of image-guided procedures, equipping them with the skills needed to excel in their careers.

Curriculum Overview

The residency consists of a surgical internship year (PGY-1), three years of diagnostic radiology (PGY-2 to PGY-4), followed by two years of interventional radiology training (PGY-5 and PGY-6). The structured timeline of training allows residents to develop clinical expertise in both pre-procedural and post-procedural care.

In the first year, residents will gain valuable experience in managing patients in the intensive care unit, which is pivotal in understanding critical care management during interventional procedures. The final year includes a rotation specifically focused on mammography, enhancing diagnostic skills across the spectrum of radiology.

Clinical Training Components

The program offers extensive procedural training, with an emphasis on periprocedural expertise and comprehensive patient management. Interventional radiology residents engage in a variety of clinical responsibilities, which are detailed as follows:

• Hospital-Based Experience: Each service typically includes one PGY-5 and one PGY-6 resident, alongside a diagnostic radiology resident. Residents alternate roles between procedure and clinical residents to ensure equitable distribution of clinical responsibilities and procedural volume.
• Office-Based Experience: Residents spend time evaluating new patients and managing follow-ups in the outpatient clinic, which is crucial for outpatient care integration.
• On-Call Responsibilities: The call schedule is structured to promote a balanced workload, with junior and chief residents sharing call duties. On-call residents are responsible for initial evaluations and coordinating care with the attending physician.
