Curriculum Overview

The fellowship curriculum is robust, providing in-depth training across a variety of disciplines within cardiology. Key components of the curriculum include:

Cardiac Care Unit (CCU)

Fellows gain extensive experience managing patients in an 18-bed CCU, participating in the care of critically ill patients with advanced cardiac pathology. They collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including internal medicine residents and pharmacists, and engage in a variety of critical care procedures.

Cardiac Catheterization

This rotation encompasses all aspects of diagnostic and interventional angiography. Fellows progressively gain responsibility and independently perform diagnostic procedures by their final year. The program covers management of coronary diseases, and fellows also participate in interventional and structural heart procedures.

Research Training

Fellows are required to complete a research project, with a minimum of four weeks per year allocated for dedicated research time. This component is crucial for developing critical thinking and scholarly skills, with mentorship provided by faculty.

Elective Rotations

During their third year, fellows have the opportunity to pursue electives in pediatric cardiology, cardio-oncology, or advanced imaging techniques such as cardiac CT and MRI.

Echocardiography and Non-invasive Cardiology

The fellowship includes extensive training in echocardiography, providing fellows with hands-on experience in both transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms, as well as advanced imaging techniques.

Electrophysiology

Fellows receive training in managing patients with various arrhythmias, participating in procedures like ablation and device implantation.

Heart Failure

Fellows gain experience with heart failure management as part of a multidisciplinary team, which enhances their consultative skills and understanding of complex clinical scenarios.

Inpatient Care and Consultation

This core component of training focuses on managing cardiac patients across multiple specialties in a team-based approach.

Training Sites

The main training site is Albany Medical Center, a 766-bed tertiary referral center that serves a broad regional population. Fellows also spend time at the Stratton Veteran's Administration Medical Center, providing exposure to unique cardiac pathologies. This diversity enriches the fellows' clinical experiences.

Application Process

Applicants must complete an ACGME-approved internal medicine residency and demonstrate clinical experience in cardiology. To apply, candidates must submit various documents, including:

• USMLE scores (minimum score of 240 on the first attempt)
• Personal statement
• Current letters of recommendation
• Medical School Transcript and Dean's Letter

Visa support is available for international candidates, specifically for J-1 visas and EAD eligibility.
