Overview

The Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship at Bayhealth Medical Center is designed to educate and develop future hematology and medical oncology physicians committed to delivering state-of-the-art healthcare. The program emphasizes mentorship and aims to elevate the standard of care in underserved and diverse population groups commonly encountered in community cancer environments.

The fellowship's mission is to not only train hematologist-oncologists capable of providing excellent care but also to initiate research that enhances understanding and treatment of neoplastic and hematologic diseases. As the only fellowship program in Delaware for these specialties, Bayhealth is strategically positioned to service both local and surrounding communities while fostering collaborative care approaches and advanced research initiatives 1.

Program Aims

The program has articulated five specific aims to fulfill its mission:

  1. To train hematologist-oncologists who can provide excellent and timely care for neoplastic, hematologic, and related disorders based on evidence-based practices.
  2. To create a new generation of hematologist-oncologists dedicated to serving the people of Delaware and surrounding regions.
  3. To establish high standards for patient safety and quality improvement in hematology and oncology.
  4. To enhance the academic and teaching environment in underserved communities, preparing fellows to serve effectively in community cancer programs.
  5. To promote collaboration and enhance research through inter-disciplinary and inter-professional teamwork.

This strategic focus ensures that the fellows become well-trained healthcare providers that can address the needs of the community effectively 1.

Curriculum Overview

The fellowship curriculum is designed to provide a well-structured training experience. Each fellow is expected to fulfill the necessary requirements that lead to board certification through the ABIM. The curriculum consists of three years of training, broken down as follows:

Year 1

  • 6 months of Inpatient Hematology/Oncology
  • 6 months of Outpatient Hematology/Oncology

Year 2

  • 6 months of Inpatient Hematology/Oncology

Participants in the fellowship will experience clinical training across multiple sites to enhance their learning and exposure to different patient populations:

  • Bayhealth Cancer Center Kent Campus
  • Bayhealth Cancer Center Sussex Campus
  • Abramson Cancer Center, Penn Medicine

This variety of clinical environments allows fellows to witness a wide range of clinical scenarios and to engage with a diverse population of patients 2.
