Jefferson Health Medical Education/Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital Program

The Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital is a distinguished three-year ACGME-accredited training program that commenced in the 2014–2015 academic year. This program trains two fellows annually, emphasizing the development of academically trained hematologists and medical oncologists who exhibit leadership in education, research, and patient care. The program is designed to assure excellence in the education of its fellows, as well as in the care provided to patients with hematologic and oncologic diseases.

The fellowship offers an extensive range of facilities and encounters with diverse populations. Trainees gain invaluable hands-on experience through rotations at three main training sites: Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital, Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital, and the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. These locations provide a robust clinical environment with busy inpatient services that allow fellows to encounter a wide variety of diseases, thus ensuring a comprehensive and well-rounded educational experience.

Application Process

The Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program is part of the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants are required to submit a completed application along with a medical school transcript, a curriculum vitae, a personal statement, a USMLE report that includes Steps 1, 2, and 3, and three letters of recommendation. Importantly, one of the recommendation letters must come from the Program Director or Chair of the Department of Medicine. Candidates who are selected for further consideration will be invited to participate in an in-person interview at the Einstein Healthcare Network.

Program Curriculum

During the fellowship, fellows will engage in a variety of clinical and research opportunities designed to help them fulfill the requirements for dual board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The fellows will rotate through both the hematology and medical oncology inpatient and outpatient services, augmented by dedicated research time. They will gain specific experiences in areas such as bone marrow and stem cell transplant, hemophilia, blood clotting disorders, acute leukemia, and transfusion medicine, ensuring diverse clinical exposure throughout their training.

Research is a critical component of the fellowship. Fellows are encouraged to explore various clinical research programs, and there are significant opportunities for scholarly activity during the fellowship duration. Since its establishment, the program has facilitated the presentation of posters at numerous national meetings, and fellows have been awarded over $300,000 in grants for their research endeavors. The fellowship also has a strong publication record, with multiple articles published in peer-reviewed and other reputable journals.

The fellowship program boasts access to a state-of-the-art 6500-square-foot Simulation and Learning Center. This facility includes various types of training resources, such as human patient simulators, simulated clinical environments, virtual procedure stations, and certification courses, all supporting team training protocols.
