Atlantic Health System/Morristown Medical Center Program

The Morristown Medical Center Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Program is a comprehensive three-year training program that emphasizes clinical excellence, education, and community service. This program nurtures junior trainees in a supportive and collaborative environment, enabling them to become board-certified specialists in Hematology and Oncology. Curriculum

The fellowship consists of structured rotation blocks spanning three years, with each rotation lasting one month and including weekly continuity clinic hours. There are also elective rotations where fellows can repeat mandatory rotations or explore new elective options based on their interests.

In the first year, fellows rotate through inpatient hematology oncology consult services, hematopathology, and various oncology specialties including lymphoma, breast oncology, and solid tumors. The second year expands the focus with additional rotations in malignant hematology, gynecologic oncology, and lung cancer, plus the inclusion of an infusion rotation. The third year allows for specialized rotations in rare tumors, bone marrow transplants, and research opportunities.

Research Opportunities

The fellowship incorporates several research rotations and culminates with a dedicated six-month research project during the final year. Fellows engage in quality improvement projects under faculty supervision and take part in significant research symposiums hosted by the Atlantic Health System. Participation in national conferences like ASCO and ASH provides additional exposure to ongoing innovations in oncology. Research opportunities include investigator-initiated studies and initiatives such as the Breakthrough Oncology Accelerator.

Application Process

The application process requires submission through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Candidates who graduated from U.S. medical schools must do so via their Dean’s office, while those from non-LCME-approved schools must access it through the ECFMG office. All applicants must provide three letters of recommendation, a curriculum vitae, a USMLE or COMLEX transcript, personal statements, and medical school transcripts.

Foreign medical graduates must submit additional documents, including an ECFMG status report and evidence of a foreign medical license when applicable. The program accepts applicants with J-1 visas, making it an attractive option for international medical graduates.
