Atlantic Health System/Goryeb Children's Hospital Program

The pediatric residency program at Goryeb Children’s Hospital, part of Atlantic Health System, prepares residents for a career in pediatrics through a comprehensive training model that balances academic rigor with practical clinical experiences. Goryeb Children's Hospital is known for its state-of-the-art facilities and commitment to both patient care and resident education, providing exposure to over 3,000 admissions and more than 95,000 outpatient visits annually. Annually, the program accommodates a class size of 12 residents, fostering a learning environment characterized by mentorship and individualized attention. The training encompasses a wide array of rotations, starting from the first year through to the third year, ensuring residents attain competencies in multiple pediatric subspecialties, particularly focusing on neonatal-perinatal medicine during specific rotations.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is structured across three years, with a series of progressive responsibilities and an emphasis on both inpatient and outpatient pediatric care. In the first year, residents rotate through critical areas such as inpatient general pediatrics, NICU, PICU, and well-baby nursery experiences. By the second year, residents maintain more responsibilities, supervising medical students and engaging in specialized areas, including pediatric emergency medicine and ambulatory care. The third year sees the residents in leadership roles, managing patients in critical care settings and selecting from various electives tailored to their career aspirations.

First-Year Residents (PGY-1)

First-year residents complete rotations in the following areas: inpatient general pediatrics, well-baby nursery, NICU, PICU, and various subspecialties including developmental and behavioral pediatrics, emergency medicine, and procedural skills. This diverse exposure is essential for building a solid clinical foundation.

Second-Year Residents (PGY-2)

In their second year, residents continue to deepen their clinical competencies while taking on more supervisory roles. They rotate through the pediatric emergency department and engage in individualized curriculum options, tailoring their training to areas of personal interest.

Third-Year Residents (PGY-3)

Third-year residents are expected to lead in patient care management and have the opportunity to select electives that further enhance their training and aspirations in pediatric subspecialties.

Research and Scholarly Activity

Research is a key component of the training at Goryeb Children’s Hospital. Every resident participates in scholarly activities, supported by the Goryeb Academic Pediatric Support committee (GAPS), which connects residents with faculty mentors for guidance on designing and implementing research projects. Several residents present their findings at both local and national conferences, contributing to the advancement of pediatric knowledge.

Training Sites

Training occurs at Goryeb Children’s Hospital, an advanced facility recognized for its pediatric trauma care, and at the Goryeb Children’s Center at Overlook Medical Center, which houses a pediatric inpatient unit and pediatric emergency room. These varied training sites afford residents a rich clinical experience in a comprehensive range of pediatric care services.

Visa Sponsorship and Application Requirements

The program sponsors J-1 visas for international medical graduates aiming to apply. Graduates from accredited U.S. medical schools, both allopathic and osteopathic, are welcome to apply, in addition to graduates from international medical schools who meet ECFMG eligibility requirements.

Competitiveness and Special Considerations

The program is characterized as highly competitive, primarily considering first-attempt passing scores on licensing exams, with a minimum score of 210 on the USMLE and 400 on the COMLEX. The program makes exceptions for applicants who demonstrate strong overall applications, and it welcomes candidates who have graduated from medical school within the last five years.
