Atlantic Health System Program

The Atlantic Health System Gastroenterology Fellowship Program aims to develop physicians who are clinical experts in gastroenterology (GI) and are adept in various healthcare settings. This three-year fellowship provides a comprehensive blend of clinical and educational training, fostering an environment conducive to lifelong learning, knowledge enhancement, and professional development. The program is structured to offer unique clinical and research experiences, assuring that fellows mature in their capabilities and can effectively teach the principles of clinical GI upon graduation.

This fellowship comprises rigorous inpatient and outpatient rotations over its duration. The first year includes rotations in the Consult Service, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Motility, and Hepatology. The second year further develops expertise with advanced GI skills while also engaging fellows with liver transplant exposure. The third year allows for in-depth experiences through Advanced GI, IBD, and Motility along with the option for electives such as Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). The structured curriculum is complemented by weekly Continuity Clinic hours throughout the program.

Application Process

Applicants must electronically complete their applications via the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). The program accepts graduates from both U.S. and non-LCME accredited medical schools, with necessary documentation including three letters of recommendation (one from the program director), a current curriculum vitae, USMLE or COMLEX transcripts, and a personal statement. For international applicants, additional documents such as an ECEFMG Status Report and foreign medical licenses (if applicable) must be submitted. The program accepts J-1 visa holders, ensuring that fellows from international medical backgrounds can join.

Training Sites and Faculty

The fellowship operates predominantly through Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center, leveraging the strength of both facilities. The faculty comprises experienced professionals including program directors and site directors, all committed to creating a learning environment that fosters growth and expertise in GI. The diverse expertise of the faculty ensures comprehensive mentorship and guidance for the fellows throughout the program.

Competitiveness and Special Requirements

The program is known to be competitive, catering to highly qualified individuals including U.S. Medical Graduates, DOs, and International Medical Graduates (IMGs). Applicants should be mindful of not exceeding limits on failed USMLE attempts as this might hinder their eligibility. Importantly, the program ensures thorough vetting to uphold rigorous standards for all prospective fellows, aiding in maintaining its esteemed reputation within the gastroenterology specialty.
