Baylor College of Medicine’s Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency Training Program is recognized as a leading program in the field of vascular surgery. Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center supports residents with significant surgical case volume, exceeding 1,500 operations annually, thus ensuring residents hone their surgical skills effectively.

Vascular Surgery Curriculum

The curriculum encompasses a comprehensive array of clinical rotations focused on vascular surgery. Over the five years, residents undergo a total of 60 months of clinical training, which includes a substantial dedication of 40 months specifically to Vascular Surgery, complemented by 18 months of Core Surgery rotations. Core surgery rotations provide essential patient evaluation and management training across various critical care settings, including intense exposure to transplant surgery. Residents gain experience in pediatric vascular surgery through rotations at Texas Children’s Hospital and are also involved in exposure to non-invasive vascular laboratory practices, imaging techniques, and outpatient cardiology, all of which play a crucial role in their comprehensive training.

Furthermore, residents actively participate in weekly conferences, encompassing morbidity and mortality reviews, vascular board reviews, and journal clubs, all designed to enhance their clinical and research competencies.

Research Opportunities

A unique feature of the program includes a full research year dedicated to fostering innovation in vascular care. This year is strategically positioned between the second and third clinical years, allowing residents to engage deeply in research activities. Trainees are encouraged to undertake research projects that focus on improving patient outcomes and developing novel treatment methodologies.

Residents work under distinguished faculty, contributing to significant research outputs, including device patents and participation in multicenter collaborative research studies. The program's emphasis on research positions graduates favorably for pursuing academic careers in surgery.

Application Process

Applications for the residency are processed through the Electronic Residency Application Services (ERAS) and candidates must participate in the National Resident Matching Program. While all potential applicants are assessed, international graduates must comply with additional regulations set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and relevant immigration services (particularly with regard to J-1 Visa sponsorship).
