Overview of the Psychiatry Residency Program

The Psychiatry Residency at Baylor College of Medicine is a fully accredited four-year program by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This program is designed to provide comprehensive training in general psychiatry, preparing residents for certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. The program emphasizes the integration of clinical practice, research opportunities, and education, all conducted in a diverse clinical setting within the Texas Medical Center in Houston.

Curriculum

Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY-I)

The first year includes four months of primary care, two months of neurology, and six months of psychiatry across various treating sites, such as the Harris Health System and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Residents will participate in the psychiatric emergency room and inpatient services, focusing on diverse patient populations.

Postgraduate Year 2 (PGY-II)

During the second year, residents build on their foundational skills in general hospital psychiatry, with exposure to consultation-liaison services and subspecialties, including child psychiatry. Opportunities for elective rotations allow residents to explore interests in areas such as neuromodulation and integrated care.

Postgraduate Year 3 (PGY-III)

The third year emphasizes outpatient care, with residents working in various clinics that cater to adult and pediatric populations. The educational curriculum during this year includes advanced psychotherapy and psychopharmacology training, as well as opportunities for research.

Postgraduate Year 4 (PGY-IV)

In the final year, residents focus on advanced clinical experiences, continue their roles with ongoing patients, and can take on leadership or chief resident positions. The curriculum allows for significant customization based on individual interests, including various electives in specialized fields.

Rotations and Clinical Experience

Rotations occur at several key training sites within the Texas Medical Center, ensuring a diverse and rich clinical experience. Key sites include:

• Ben Taub Hospital: A Level 1 trauma center with a dedicated psychiatric emergency room.

Research Opportunities

The program encourages residents to engage in research, with dedicated time allocated for research activities throughout training. Baylor's Psychiatry Residency offers a designated Research Track for residents with a strong interest in academic psychiatry and research.

Residents will participate in research projects, contribute to peer-reviewed publications, and attend national conferences, thus preparing them for careers as psychiatric physician-scientists.

Community Outreach and Involvement

Residents have the opportunity to participate in community service initiatives through programs like PROPS (Psychiatry Residents Outreach to the Public Sector) and other outreach initiatives aimed at enhancing mental health awareness and education in the community.

Application Process and Requirements

The program accepts applicants for both the PGY-I and PGY-II levels. For PGY-I, 12 categorical positions and one research track position are available each year. Applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation and are encouraged to demonstrate commitment to psychiatry during their medical education.

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must have passing scores on both USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 on the first attempt and be eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship. The program does not sponsor H-1B visas.
