Cooper Medical School of Rowan University/Cooper University Hospital Program

The Cooper Medical School of Rowan University/Cooper University Hospital Family Medicine Residency offers an in-depth, comprehensive program aimed at training highly skilled family physicians ready to deliver comprehensive primary care, especially in underserved areas like Camden, NJ. This 3-year program enrolls 10 residents per class, emphasizing engagement with the community, scholarship, research, diversity, and resident wellness. It prepares its graduates for a wide range of future careers within family medicine by providing a broad scope of experiences across inpatient medicine, ambulatory care, labor and delivery (L&D), pediatrics, urgent care, and community outreach.

The program's mission focuses on fostering compassionate, innovative family physicians who are committed to inclusive, evidence-based medical care. They emphasize five pillars: Clinical Practice, Medical Education, Community Engagement, Scholarship and Research, and Leadership, all aimed at serving the diverse patient population and improving community health.

Clinical training sites offer a variety of learning environments, including primary care settings across South and Central New Jersey, a 635-bed acute care academic medical center that's also a Level 1 Trauma Center, inpatient and outpatient pediatrics care at Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper and Cooper Pediatrics, OB/GYN collaboration for L&D and ambulatory experience, MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper for oncology care experience, along with specific programs in geriatrics and addiction medicine.

The program also offers unique tracks to allow residents to specialize their training based on their interests. These tracks offer high-volume experiences in specific areas within family medicine.

Regarding application requirements, the program specifies that applicants must have graduated from an accredited medical school within the last 5 years and completed U.S.-based clinical experiences within the last 3 years. Eligible candidates include U.S. citizens, resident aliens, or those holding a J-1 visa. The selection process involves a review of applicants' ERAS applications, which must include a common application form, curriculum vitae, medical school transcript, original letters of recommendation, Dean’s letter, personal statement, USMLE or COMLEX reports, and ECFMG certification if applicable.
