Residency Advisor

The Emanate Health Family Medicine Residency Program is designed to cultivate innovative, forward-thinking family physicians who are prepared to transform the healthcare landscape. Curriculum Overview

The residency program encompasses a three-year curriculum that evolves annually based on feedback from residents and faculty. The first year consists of dedicated training across several essential areas: Family Medicine Inpatient Service, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Surgery, and additional longitudinal experiences. Each year, the curriculum integrates innovative topics such as Health Systems Management and Quality Improvement and allows residents to participate in various elective rotations tailored to their interests.

Yearly Breakdown

In the first year, the curriculum comprises 13 four-week blocks, including orientation, internal rotations, and vacations. The second year is divided into outpatient and inpatient responsibilities, with an emphasis on rotations in Emergency Medicine, ICU, and electives in Community Medicine and Psychiatry. The third year entails advanced training in elective areas, practice management, and continuity of care in outpatient settings.

Rotations and Training Sites

Residents train at both Emanate Health hospitals and the East Valley Community Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), which enriches the training experience by providing exposure to a diverse patient population. Residents will experience longitudinal training in specialty clinics such as Pediatrics, OB, and various procedural clinics, enhancing hands-on competencies in family medicine.

Areas of Concentration

The program also offers unique Areas of Concentration (AOC), where residents can focus on specific disciplines. These areas require additional dedicated elective time, longitudinal projects, and scholarly work. Specialties include Hospitalist Medicine, OB/Maternal Health, and Global Health, among other disciplines. AOCs are selected at the beginning of the PGY-2 year, allowing tailored experiences according to each resident’s career aspirations.

Research and Scholarly Activity

Residents are actively encouraged to engage in scholarly activities, including quality improvement projects, case reports, and research. Faculty members provide mentorship while overseeing projects that often culminate in presentations at well-respected conferences. This focus on research helps residents develop crucial skills in evidence-based medicine and enhance their professional profiles.

Visa Support and Competitiveness

The program welcomes both U.S. citizens and international medical graduates (IMGs) and is supportive of visa sponsorship. It currently sponsors H-1B visas for qualified candidates. The program is known to be competitive, primarily seeking candidates who have demonstrated commitment to family medicine, cultural competency, and community-oriented practice, with a particular focus on serving underserved populations.

Application Requirements

Eligibility criteria stipulate that applicants should have completed their medical education within three years of the application cycle and must provide proof of U.S. clinical experience of at least six months. For international medical graduates, a valid ECFMG certificate is required to be considered for an interview, ensuring that candidates have met the necessary educational standards.
