University of California (Irvine) Program

The University of California, Irvine Family Medicine Residency Program focuses on training excellent clinicians to provide compassionate medical care to vulnerable communities. Their unique community-academic setting integrates technology and innovation to combine intensive clinical training with community engagement and advocacy for socially responsible care.

The program aims to serve diverse communities and seeks competent and compassionate candidates who can deliver patient-centered, culturally appropriate care. Residents train in federally qualified health centers in Santa Ana and participate in rigorous learning environments at UCI Medical Center, Children's Hospital of Orange County, and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Long Beach.

The program offers various tracks enabling residents to develop specialized skills, such as the Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community (PRIME-LC), Sports Medicine Track, OB & Repro program, HEAL seminars, Group Medical Visits, Teaching Kitchen, Geriatrics Fellowship, and Sports Medicine Fellowship. Residents also partake in school outreach programs, UCI Outreach Clinics, and interdisciplinary team care.

Application requirements include the standard documentation through ERAS, including scores from USMLE Step 1 & 2 or COMLEX 1 & 2, letters of reference, personal statement, current photograph, and participation in the National Resident Matching Program for residency positions.

The program is open to DACA students, requires proof of passing USMLE exams for international graduates, and does not sponsor J-1 or H-1 Visas for postgraduate training. Passing Step exams on the first attempt is preferred but not mandatory. The selection process is holistic, considering applicants with strong credentials in various areas of their application.

The program provides moonlighting opportunities during the R-3 year, and post-residency, graduates have pursued fellowships, academic medicine, community health centers, or private practices. The diverse patient population includes individuals from various backgrounds, fostering learning in complex care coordination.

Residents also have the unique opportunity to participate in specialized tracks within the program such as PRIME-LC, a track designed to train physicians to serve underserved Latino communities, and the Sports Medicine Track, which provides focused training in primary care sports medicine.
