The Hematopathology Fellowship Program at Emory University School of Medicine provides an academically-oriented one-year experience. This program emphasizes clinical exposure and research activities. The curriculum involves rotations that cover a variety of areas relevant to hematopathology including morphologic evaluation of blood and bone marrow, lymph node, and extra-nodal tissues. Additionally, fellows engage in flow cytometric and immunohistochemical immunophenotyping, cytogenetics/FISH, molecular diagnostics, hemoglobinopathies, coagulation studies, and laboratory management, with elective time available for research projects.

A substantial case volume at the adult and pediatric facilities reinforces the clinical experience, aggregating about 3,500 cases for morphologic assessment, 4,000 cases for flow cytometric immunophenotyping, and another 3,500 cases for cytogenetic and molecular diagnostics. Such extensive experience is enhanced by busy hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and fine needle aspiration services that provide variety and augment the fellows’ workload.

The program places strong emphasis on interpreting and integrating diagnostic testing across the spectrum of hematopathology, with fellows progressively taking on clinical service responsibilities. They also participate in tumor boards and have opportunities to educate residents, medical students, and laboratory staff.

Application Requirements

To apply for the fellowship, candidates must possess a Georgia medical license and have completed the requisite training in American Board of Pathology for AP/CP, AP, or CP. A maximum of two ACGME-accredited fellowship positions are available annually. Essential application documents include a CAP Fellowship Application, current CV, personal statement, copies of USMLE (Step 1, Step 2 CS, Step 2 CK, and Step 3) results or COMLEX results, and an ECFMG certificate if applicable for international graduates.

Letters of recommendation, specifically three, addressed to the program director, are also required to complete the application package.
