University of North Carolina Hospitals Program

The Hematopathology Fellowship at the University of North Carolina Hospitals offers a one-year intensive training program focused on diagnostic hematopathology. This program is designed to provide comprehensive training in various hematopathology disciplines and is fully accredited by the ACGME.

The fellowship encompasses a diverse range of hematopathological practices, preparing trainees in the management and medical oversight of a high-volume hematology laboratory, which processes between 800 to 1,000 Complete Blood Counts (CBCs) daily. Fellows will gain hands-on experience with the evaluation of peripheral blood smears, as well as bone marrow and lymph node biopsies, and participate in specialized hematology procedures.

Curriculum and Training Environment

The program allows fellows to prepare detailed diagnostic reports that integrate morphological, histochemical, flow cytometric, cytogenetic, and molecular genetic data. The Hematopathology Fellowship collaborates closely with other laboratory services to enhance practical training, particularly in diagnostic flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and blood coagulation. The curriculum includes participation in regular conferences to emphasize clinico-pathologic correlations.

In this robust environment, fellows are expected to actively engage in the instruction of medical students, as well as pathology, hematology, and oncology residents. Research endeavors are also encouraged, providing fellows with numerous opportunities to participate in ongoing projects within both the Hematopathology Division and the broader Pathology Department.

Program Requirements

To apply for this fellowship, candidates must hold either an M.D. or D.O. degree and have completed at least two years of accredited residency training in pathology.

Stipend Structure

The fellowship stipends are competitive, set at one level higher than the trainee's core residency program training years, following the UNC Hospitals’ Housestaff salary schedule.

Applications for the Hematopathology Fellowship starting July 1, 2026, are currently being accepted. Candidates can initiate the application by emailing the fellowship coordinator with their curricula vitae, personal statements, and CAP Fellowship Applications. Alongside these documents, three letters of recommendation must be submitted, one of which should come from the applicant's current program director. If selected for an interview, candidates are also required to provide an official medical school transcript, obtained directly from their registrar’s office prior to the interview date.
