University of North Carolina Hospitals Program
Overview
The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, offers a one-year ACGME accredited fellowship in obstetric anesthesiology. This program is distinctive as it encompasses a wealth of clinical experience, exceptional educational resources, and the opportunity to engage in significant research activities within a leading academic institution.
The fellowship is conducted at the UNC Medical Center, renowned for its Women’s Hospital that manages over 4,000 deliveries annually. Observing its designation as a Level 4 Maternal Care Center and a Level 4 NICU, the facility is a prominent center of excellence, recognized by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesiology and Perinatology (SOAP). This environment ensures a comprehensive exposure to a wide range of complex maternal and fetal conditions.
Curriculum and Training
The curriculum of the obstetric anesthesiology fellowship is meticulously designed to develop expert consultants within the field. During their training, fellows are supervised by core faculty members, which include six dedicated obstetric anesthesiologists, fostering an enriching learning environment. The educational structure aims to prepare fellows for successful careers in both academic and private practice settings.
Clinical Experience
Fellows engage in extensive clinical duties, primarily within labor and delivery units comprising 15 labor rooms, 3 operating rooms, 5 triage rooms, and a post-anesthesia care unit. Clinical hours typically span from 6:45 AM to 4:30 PM, without in-house call requirements, which enhances the quality of life of the fellows. There is continuous supervision by faculty anesthesiologists around the clock, allowing fellows to manage a diverse patient population with varying complexities.
As a regional referral center, fellows handle cases that include but are not limited to severe pre-eclampsia, significant obesity, various cardiac and neurological conditions, and more. Moreover, as a designated Fetal Surgery Center, the fellows gain exposure to intrauterine surgical procedures, enriching their training experience. The program also includes required rotations in Neonatal ICU and Maternal Fetal Medicine, along with elective options in Global Health and Transfusion Medicine.
Educational Programs
The fellowship experience is bolstered by a comprehensive educational curriculum that integrates hands-on experiences, lectures, simulation, journal clubs, and problem-based learning discussions. Fellows participate in journal clubs alongside colleagues from Duke University, presenting relevant literature for collective discourse.
Additionally, a unique aspect of the fellowship is the inclusion of a fellow-level lecture series conducted by faculty throughout the fellowship year, along with access to SOAP’s exclusive webinar series tailored for obstetric anesthesia fellows. This ensures fellows not only gain knowledge but also build networks within the professional community.
Research Opportunities
Fellows are required to engage in both quality improvement and research projects, allowing them to cultivate skills in study design, manuscript preparation, and effective implementation of research initiatives. The program provides dedicated non-clinical time to support fellows in achieving meaningful contributions to the field through research.
Application Information
To apply for this fellowship, candidates must possess an MD or equivalent and have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited anesthesiology residency. The application process is managed through the San Francisco Match system. The program allows for international applicants, provided they meet the requisite ACGME eligibility criteria, with opportunities for J-1 visa sponsorship available. This inclusivity reflects the program's commitment to a diverse cohort of fellows.
