Clinical Experience

Fellows engage in extensive clinical duties, primarily within labor and delivery units comprising 15 labor rooms, 3 operating rooms, 5 triage rooms, and a post-anesthesia care unit. Clinical hours typically span from 6:45 AM to 4:30 PM, without in-house call requirements, which enhances the quality of life of the fellows. There is continuous supervision by faculty anesthesiologists around the clock, allowing fellows to manage a diverse patient population with varying complexities.

As a regional referral center, fellows handle cases that include but are not limited to severe pre-eclampsia, significant obesity, various cardiac and neurological conditions, and more. Moreover, as a designated Fetal Surgery Center, the fellows gain exposure to intrauterine surgical procedures, enriching their training experience. The program also includes required rotations in Neonatal ICU and Maternal Fetal Medicine, along with elective options in Global Health and Transfusion Medicine.

Educational Programs

The fellowship experience is bolstered by a comprehensive educational curriculum that integrates hands-on experiences, lectures, simulation, journal clubs, and problem-based learning discussions. Fellows participate in journal clubs alongside colleagues from Duke University, presenting relevant literature for collective discourse.

Additionally, a unique aspect of the fellowship is the inclusion of a fellow-level lecture series conducted by faculty throughout the fellowship year, along with access to SOAP’s exclusive webinar series tailored for obstetric anesthesia fellows.
