The University of Cincinnati Medical Center offers a comprehensive fellowship program in Obstetric Anesthesiology that aims to equip fellows with the necessary skills in clinical care and judgment, teaching, and research. This program is ACGME-accredited and focuses on providing optimal patient care. The fellowship is structured to allow fellows to participate in anesthesia care for patients in the Obstetric Special Care Unit (OBSCU) as well as in the multidisciplinary teams involved in complex deliveries in the Main Operating Room. These cases include those involving abnormal placentation, life-threatening cardiac conditions, and other high-risk scenarios.

The program emphasizes the development of critical skills in the preoperative evaluation of patients, interpretation of cardiovascular diagnostic test data, and monitoring of hemodynamic and respiratory parameters. Additionally, fellows gain experience in perioperative critical care, which includes ventilatory support and perioperative pain management. They have the unique opportunity to closely collaborate with top-notch Neonatologists and Pediatric Anesthesiologists at the UCMC Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

It is notable for its Level 1 trauma center and one of only two Level 3 NICUs in the region. This proximity allows for a seamless integration of obstetrical, fetal, and pediatric care. The labor and delivery unit is well-equipped with 13 labor rooms, 6 triage rooms, and 3 operating rooms dedicated to around 2,500 deliveries annually. Various types of anesthesia, including epidural and general anesthesia, are employed based on patient needs.
