The University of North Carolina Hospitals offers a robust Independent Interventional Radiology Residency program recognized for its comprehensive curriculum and commitment to excellence in clinical training, educational development, and research opportunities. Program Structure

The Independent Interventional Radiology Residency is a 24-month ACGME-accredited program, welcoming candidates who have completed a four-year Diagnostic Radiology residency and a required internship. This structure allows for a comprehensive approach to the training of residents, ensuring that they develop a well-rounded skill set.

The curriculum is designed to expose residents to various essential topics and experiences in Interventional Radiology. Early Specialization in IR (ESIR) is offered for select diagnostic radiology residents that enables them to transition into the Independent IR residency with a focus on IR during their last year of diagnostic training. Graduates can enter Independent training for one year, focusing on both clinical excellence and procedural proficiency.

Curriculum and Rotations

The program emphasizes experiential learning through a clinically diverse rotation structure, including time in various specialized areas such as the outpatient hospital, office-based labs, and clinics. During interventional radiology blocks, residents engage in focused daily lectures, journal clubs, morbidity and mortality (M&M) discussions, and case conferences. This encompasses extensive training in both vascular and non-vascular procedures, including diagnostic and therapeutic angiography, embolization techniques, and interventional oncology procedures among others.

Residents also participate in valuable interdisciplinary conferences, including those focused on GI, GU tumors, and vascular diseases, contributing to a well-rounded educational experience.

Research Opportunities

UNC's program actively promotes research engagement among residents. Each resident is expected to publish at least one research paper during their time in the program. Opportunities for attendance at national meetings and conferences to present research findings further enhance the educational experience. Travel expenses associated with presenting at these conferences are reimbursed by the department, reinforcing the program's commitment to both academic and professional growth.

Application Process and Eligibility

Prospective applicants to the Independent IR residency must meet specific requirements outlined by the program. A completed ERAS application must include a personal statement, medical school transcript, USMLE scores, and a minimum of three letters of recommendation, with no maximum graduation date cutoff for medical school applicants. The program is open to US and international medical graduates as long as they possess a valid ECFMG certificate.

As per the program’s visa policy, UNC Hospitals exclusively sponsors J-1 visas for all residency positions in Interventional Radiology. They do not support H-1B visa applications.

Applicants are encouraged to highlight diverse experiences as the program actively seeks a diverse candidate pool from a variety of medical schools, including both MD and DO graduates.
