The program provides a rich educational environment where fellows can receive both diagnostic and research training.
Program Structure
The fellowship is accredited by the ACGME and can be completed in either one or two years. The first year is primarily focused on diagnostic hematopathology, incorporating core experiences in morphology, immunophenotyping, and molecular diagnostics. The second year is research-oriented, encouraging fellows to engage in investigative projects that utilize the extensive lab resources available.
1Each fellow will participate in evaluating a substantial volume of hematopathology cases annually; the lab processes over 5,400 cases each year, including a mix of in-house bone marrows and tissue biopsies.
Clinical Training
Fellows have the opportunity to work at various affiliated institutions, including the Vanderbilt University Hospital, a 1,000-bed tertiary care facility, and the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Additionally, training at the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System enhances the fellows' clinical exposure to a diverse patient population.
1Research Opportunities
Research is a significant aspect of the Hematopathology Fellowship. Fellows can work closely with faculty members who specialize in various areas such as leukemias, lymphomas, myelodysplasia, and other hematologic malignancies. Research projects may include the application of flow cytometric technology and the investigation of the molecular pathogenesis of these diseases.
Facilities
The program offers exceptional facilities, including state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratories and core research labs. These resources support clinical and translational research, allowing fellows to integrate basic science with their clinical training.
1Application Process
Candidates interested in the fellowship must submit a cover letter, a CV, a personal statement, and three letters of recommendation, along with their ECFMG certificate if applicable. The program participates in the Hematopathology Fellowship Match, with applications typically starting in the fall of the preceding year for positions beginning the following July.
1Eligibility and Competitiveness
The fellowship is competitive, welcoming applications from graduates of U.S. and Canadian medical schools and graduates from international medical schools who have ECFMG certification. The program values diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Visa Sponsorship
The Vanderbilt Hematopathology Fellowship is capable of sponsoring various visa types for qualified international medical graduates, aligning with the institution's commitment to diversity and inclusion in training healthcare professionals from different countries.
Educational Environment
Committed to an environment of mutual support, the program encourages fellows to engage with experienced faculty and collaborate with peers. Regular didactic sessions, teaching conferences, and exposure to interdisciplinary care further enhance the fellows’ learning experiences.
