Overview of the Emory Sleep Medicine Fellowship

The Emory Sleep Medicine Fellowship is a post-doctoral training program offered by the Department of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. This program enrolls four fellows annually for a comprehensive 12-month training period. The fellowship is structured to develop excellence in the practice of sleep medicine through various educational, clinical, and research opportunities.

Goals of the Fellowship

Clinical Training Experience

Clinical training occurs across various sites, including:

  • Emory Healthcare
  • Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston
  • Atlanta VA Health Care System

During training, fellows will engage in outpatient clinics, continuity clinics, and learning experiences across various specialties, including ENT, Obesity Medicine, Behavioral Sleep Medicine, and Dental Sleep Medicine.

Research Training Component

Fellows are expected to engage in scholarly clinical research, with opportunities to develop original research projects under the mentorship of faculty. The fellowship encourages meetings with various potential mentors during clinical rotations, aiming to foster the development of intellectual and analytical skills necessary for a future in academia. Each fellow is expected to complete at least one significant research project during the training.

Didactic Conferences and Collaboration

The structure of the fellowship includes rigorous didactic training through weekly conferences. These conferences consist of:

  • Monday Case Conference
  • Monday Didactics, Journal Club, and Guest Speakers
  • Wednesday Atlanta VA Noon Conference, Journal Club, Board Exam Review, and Wellness Activities

This collaborative learning environment encourages knowledge sharing and professional development among fellows and faculty.

Application Requirements

To be eligible for the fellowship, completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in one of the following specialties is required:

  • Family Medicine
  • Internal Medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Psychiatry
  • Neurology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Anesthesiology

While the program does not provide H-1B visa sponsorship, international Medical Graduates (IMGs) may apply if they possess an ECFMG certification. The application process is conducted exclusively via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and requires various supporting materials, including a CV, personal statement, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and test scores.

Interview Process

Interviews for the fellowship are by invitation only and will be conducted virtually. Candidates will participate in a program overview, attend a morning conference, and meet with faculty and current fellows, allowing for both assessment and engagement with the program’s culture and academic environment.
