Overview
The Sleep Medicine Fellowship program at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is designed to provide extensive training and education in the field of sleep medicine. This program emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach, integrating various specialties such as psychology, psychiatry, pulmonary/critical care, neurology, pediatrics, as well as ENT and dentistry. Faculty members at MUSC strive to create a rewarding fellowship experience that equips fellows with the skills necessary to succeed in various aspects of sleep medicine, culminating in eligibility for the ABIM Sleep Medicine Board examination.
Fellows experience a broad spectrum of sleep disorders, including obstructive and central sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias, and narcolepsy. They gain practical exposure through training in multiple ambulatory facilities located in the Charleston metropolitan area, including the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and MUSC's University Hospital. The program utilizes American Academy of Sleep Medicine accredited sleep centers for comprehensive training in lab and home sleep testing procedures.
Application Process
Applications for the MUSC Sleep Medicine Fellowship are processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Candidates are expected to have passed the USMLE Step 3 exam (or the equivalent COMLEX Step 3) prior to the fellowship start date and, if applicable, must possess a current ECFMG certificate. Eligible applicants include graduates from ACGME-accredited residency programs in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, ENT, or Neurology. The program accepts applications from US citizens, permanent residents, and individuals on J1 visas.
The Fellowship Selection Committee requires a completed application packet that includes a CV, personal statement, three letters of recommendation, and USMLE/COMLEX transcripts. Applications must be received by September 1 for fellowship training beginning in July of the following year. After reviewing the applications, selected candidates will be invited for virtual interviews scheduled between mid-August and November.
Curriculum and Education
The fellowship curriculum is structured to provide fellows with a continuous educational experience, balancing exposure to both pediatric and adult patient populations throughout the year. The program emphasizes interpersonal skills and professionalism while actively engaging fellows with faculty in direct patient care.

Research and Mentorship
