HCA Healthcare Kansas City/Menorah Medical Center Program

The HCA Healthcare Kansas City/Menorah Medical Center Program offers a General Surgery Residency Training Program designed to educate future surgeons thoroughly. The five-year program aims to prepare residents in basic science, clinical knowledge, cognitive and technical skills, and judgment required of surgeons and surgical leaders. Residents are provided individualized learning opportunities with support from faculty and staff committed to their educational and clinical needs. The program emphasizes diverse cultural exposure and values, preparing residents for competitive subspecialty fellowships or direct practice upon completion.

The curriculum includes rotations in various surgical specialties such as general surgery, plastic surgery, anesthesia, urology, trauma care, transplant, thoracic, pediatric surgery, surgical oncology, head/neck, and breast surgery. Residents have the opportunity to rotate through different hospitals and outpatient surgery centers, including Level 1 Trauma Centers and Centers of Excellence in Robotic, Bariatric, and Colorectal Surgery.

The program director, Dr. Roger de la Torre, MD, FACS, FASMBS, FNAI, emphasizes the value of hands-on experience in the operating room, with residents being encouraged to participate in surgeries early and regularly. The program also offers educational conferences, simulation training, and a well-being focus, including annual wellness courses, fatigue mitigation strategies, and access to support services through the HCA Employee Assistance Program.
