4504844001Welcome to the HCA Houston Healthcare / University of Houston Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program, based at the Kingwood location. As Houston's newest vascular surgery training program, it aims to reflect the city's growth and diversity while preparing its trainees for the future of vascular surgery. The program offers a comprehensive two-year fellowship accredited by the ACGME, designed specifically for graduates of general surgery residency programs and focuses on a broad range of skills, including investigational, complex, and routine surgical cases.
1During the course of the program, fellows will encounter a variety of clinical scenarios such as managing patients in cardiogenic shock on ECMO and performing intricate open and endovascular aortic surgeries. Additionally, fellows will engage in research initiatives, aimed at fostering a clinical environment where groundbreaking studies can thrive. The curriculum also includes rotations in outpatient labs where fellows gain valuable experience in outpatient dialysis access and endovascular peripheral arterial cases.
1Program Structure and Curriculum
The fellowship's first year involves rotations across multiple campuses, including HCA Kingwood and HCA Tomball, allowing fellows to gain experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. One month of the first year is dedicated to research and ultrasound training, which is crucial in enhancing diagnostic skills. In the second year, the program expands to provide more specialized outpatient lab experiences that are essential for mastering complex vascular repair techniques.
1The program also emphasizes comprehensive clinical education through hands-on experiences, encouraging fellows to learn both open femoral-pedal bypass techniques and complex endovascular procedures. This well-rounded approach ensures that candidates leave the program fully prepared to meet the demands of the vascular surgery specialty.
1Training Facilities
HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood is equipped with 457 beds and operates as a Level II trauma center, serving as the GME headquarters for the greater Houston area. The facility is particularly known for its advanced cardiac and vascular care, making it an ideal environment for fellows to hone their skills under real-world pressures while leading teams of general surgery residents and medical students.
1Salary and Benefits
Fellows in this program are compensated with a competitive salary structure. For the academic year 2024-2025, the salary for PGY 6 is set at $73,882 and for PGY 7, it is $77,584. In addition to salary, fellows are eligible for a range of benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance. Other benefits provided include an employee assistance program, retirement plans with employer matching, and an annual meal stipend of $950. An orientation stipend of up to $1,000 is also available, along with 20 days of paid time off for vacation and sick leave.
1Research Opportunities
The program is designed to foster a scholarly environment where fellows are encouraged to engage in significant clinical research. Research is an integral part of the fellowship, allowing fellows to contribute to advancements in the field of vascular surgery. Collaborations with various departments and institutions enhance the scope and impact of the research conducted by the fellows.
1Visa Sponsorship and Competitiveness
Regarding visa sponsorship, the program typically does not sponsor J-1 visas directly. Applicants are encouraged to confirm their visa status as they apply. The fellowship is considered competitive, aiming to attract qualified U.S. graduates who have completed a general surgery residency. While the program seeks candidates with strong academic backgrounds, it remains open to International Medical Graduates (IMG) if they meet the necessary qualifications.
1Application Requirements
Applicants to the HCA Houston Healthcare / University of Houston Vascular Surgery Fellowship should have completed a general surgery residency. Although specific USMLE scores may not be mandated, candidates are assessed holistically, focusing on their clinical skills, research experience, and overall fit within the program.
1Unique Aspects of the Program
This fellowship program stands out due to its alignment with the University of Houston and its focus on producing well-rounded, competent vascular surgeons. The collaborative effort aims to leverage the combined strengths of both institutions to foster a rich learning environment for trainees. With a commitment to diversity, the program looks forward to creating a cohort that not only reflects the local community but also promotes inclusivity within the medical field.
