The Undersea & Hyperbaric Medicine Fellowship at Hennepin Healthcare is a one-year program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This highly regarded fellowship has been in operation since 1964 and has a long-standing tradition in pioneering treatments in the field of hyperbaric medicine. The fellowship utilizes a state-of-the-art facility, including the advanced Fink multiplace hyperbaric chamber, and a comprehensive Hyperbaric Medicine Center covering 10,000 square feet. The program is recognized as Minnesota's only 24/7 Emergency Hyperbaric Oxygen facility, providing crucial hyperbaric treatments continuously throughout the day and night. This allows fellows to gain extensive practical experience in a variety of emergency and non-emergency contexts

Program Curriculum

The fellowship curriculum is designed to provide extensive clinical training tailored to treating both chronic and emergency conditions. Fellows participate actively in administering over 5,500 treatments and consults annually. This involvement ensures that fellows have the opportunity to manage a diverse patient population with various conditions, including diabetic ulcers, radiation injuries, non-healing wounds, and acute traumatic ischemia. The program also emphasizes emergency treatments, giving fellows hands-on experience with acute issues such as carbon monoxide poisoning, arterial gas embolisms, and life-threatening soft tissue infections

Clinical Rotations and Experience

Fellows will work within the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine, which is equipped with independently controlled treatment locks, allowing for a maximum of 23 seated patients or five patients in intensive care beds. All patient treatments are closely monitored with advanced communication and gas delivery systems, ensuring the highest safety standards. The integration of critical care technology into the training environment facilitates a collaborative learning experience, as fellows engage alongside emergency physicians and board-certified faculty in both Emergency and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine

Application Requirements

To apply for the fellowship, candidates must submit the following documentation: verification of completion of residency, medical school transcripts, a curriculum vitae, a personal statement, a license to practice medicine in the U.S., a letter of recommendation from a residency program director, and two letters of recommendation from current colleagues, one of which must come from the residency program. This set of requirements ensures that the program selects fellows who are well-prepared for the challenges and learning experiences during their time in the fellowship
